Ryan Dalton became
the first consensus Freshman All-American in program history
on Wednesday.
DURHAM,
N.C. — Third baseman Ryan Dalton was named a second-team
Freshman All-American by Baseball America on
Wednesday.
Dalton, this spring's Southland Conference
Freshman of the Year, previously was honored by both Collegiate
Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association, making him the first consensus Freshman All-American in
program history.
The Sugar Land native is coming off an
inaugural season that saw him record a .305 batting average with
team bests of 17 home runs and 51 RBIs (both UTSA frosh records) in
50 starts at the hot corner. Despite not playing since May 22, he
finished the year tied for the Southland lead in homers and tied for
second nationally among freshmen. Dalton's squad-leading 120 total
bases this spring translated to a .632 slugging percentage and he
also paced the Birds with 19 multi-hit and 13 multi-RBI contests in
addition to crossing the plate 38 times.
He was the lone
freshman from the Southland to appear on the two squads.
Ryan
Crew (2003), Michael Rockett (2006) and Tim Palincsar (2007) are the
other three players to earn Freshman All-America honors in UTSA's
19-year history, but all of theirs came from Collegiate
Baseball.
